The 3 Best Things to Eat in Bali

Tuesday August 30, 2016 | by Daniel Goh

Think back to the first time you ate your favourite food.

Maybe you were a little hungry but you weren’t expecting much, and you just scooped it up and put it in your mouth like any other meal. But the tastes that hit your tongue, the sensations that went off in your head, it was like nothing you had ever tasted before. Pure bliss. You found yourself smiling like the happiest person on Earth and you couldn’t even describe it in full. It was just so good.

Now, if you managed to get our Boss Is Away 99% discount to Bali earlier today, this article will be extra helpful for your trip! Presenting the 3 Best Things to Eat in Bali!

1. Babi Guling

The first dish on the list is Babi Guling, a.k.a Balinese Roast Suckling Pig. This is hands down the best pork I’ve ever eaten, beating the likes of Xiao Long Bao, Bak Kwa and Roast Pork. The skin is light and crispy while tender slices of meat drizzled in savoury juices invite you in for a taste.

Served on a bed of white rice and paired with green Balinese chilli, this dish is a must-eat on every trip to Bali. A superb tried-and-tested shop for Babi Guling is Ibu Oka Warung Babi Guling in Ubud, Bali. Ibu means mother, indicating delicious food filled with a mother’s love.

Ibu Oka has 3 shops in Ubud, and are only open for lunch or until they run out of pork for the day. Get there early, get a seat and be prepared to be blown away.

2. Crispy Fried Duck

No restaurant does Crispy Fried Duck better than Bebek Bengil, which translates to the Dirty Duck Diner. According to the owner, a flock of dirty ducks ran into the restaurant as the very first guests when the Bebek Bengil restaurant in Bali was about to open, therefore the strange sounding name.

But rest assured, the duck served isn’t dirty. In fact, it is so damn good. The skin crackles when you bite into it, leaving crumbs of crispy skin to mix with your rice and vegetables. The meat is perfectly fried, well-seasoned and simply melts in your mouth. Duck meat has this unique taste and somehow Bebek Bengil just manages to elevate it to the next level.

Their restaurant in Ubud covers a huge space, housing several pavilions that are separated by fountains, statues and grass. The atmosphere is extremely relaxing, just the kind you would expect to find in Bali.

3. Naughty Nuri’s

Naughty Nuri’s is the ultimate destination to eat Pork Ribs. The ribs from the original warung (small restaurant) in Ubud, Bali taste way better than their Singapore outlet. The ribs are marinated and boiled in a thick, rich BBQ sauce, allowing the meat to tenderise and absorb the BBQ flavours. After that, they are cooked on a smoking hot grill before being served.

You will smell the mouthwatering cooking before you see the warung, and let’s put it this way: breathing in the delicious smell of smoky, charred, barbecued pork ribs from Naughty Nuri’s is one of life’s simple pleasures; tasting the meat is your tongue being reborn. They have simply perfected the art of grilling pork ribs.

When you’re there, be sure to indulge in their speciality martinis as well! You’ll soon find out where the ‘naughty’ in their name came from.
